July 6, 2011 - Vol. 10, No. 15 Greetings! I've received a flurry of inquiries about the 'Dark Night of the Soul' and other 'big transformation' issues that come down to this: How do we let go of the life we planned, to make room for the authentic life that's waiting for us? That's been called the Hero's Journey -- of which the Dark Night of the Soul is one phase. It all started for me in late 2000, when I experienced a life-and-death medical emergency while traveling abroad. Though I didn't know it then, in a matter of moments, everything had changed for me, as if invisible shock waves went rippling through my life as I knew it. It would take me several years, and radical life changes, to even begin to know what that meant. When I returned to the United States after that fateful experience, I had a brick-and-mortar consultancy to run, a staff to manage, a busy docket of organizational change and communication clients to serve, my first book being published, and the rest of 'life as I'd known it'. Yet I found that the things that had motivated me for so long no longer did. My motivation, inspiration, joy, creativity, and vision seemed to have gone missing. It was as if I'd returned home, but everything was foreign to me. This, needless to say, was a real crisis - a bona fide Dark Night of the Soul. But then, I didn't know what that meant, either. Well, I know a bit more about that journey now, and I continue to learn, to explore, to adventure -- sometimes with grace and even joy, and other times with white knuckles and a look of terror on my face, I'm sure! But I've learned that it's all part of the Journey (and I've earned a few more gray hairs along the way!). :) Over the years since those initial shockwaves, through a series of tumultuous changes and a bona fide Heroine's Journey, I've been called upon to radically change my mind, transform old habits of thought, track unhelpful energy patterns, learn a whole lot, and more. As a result, I'm wholeheartedly committed to and passionate about sharing what I've learned with others moving through transition, change, and transformation, and being called to embrace new ways and new visions of what's possible -- as so many of us are now. There is an ancient wisdom saying from the writings of St. Paul: Be renewed by the changing of your mind. There are others that speak of that change starting with a change of heart -- that the longest journey we'll take is from our heads to our hearts. This couldn't be more true. And it also couldn't be more challenging. That's probably why it's called a Hero's Journey. But the Hero, or Heroine, gains gifts in the journey, too. So how do we 'let go of the life we planned, so we can live the authentic life that's waiting for us', to paraphrase the great mythologist, Joseph Campbell? How do we even begin to shift the habits of thought that are so deeply entrenched and 'normal' to us that we hardly notice them -- patterns that now create unnecessary stress and havoc in our relationships, work, and other areas of life? How do we change our experience, and move into new possibilities and visions, by renewing and changing our minds and hearts? One of the requirements of the Hero's Journey is that we share with others what we've picked up along the way. So....
