Where do you deny your independent spirit?

Each of us, at some point or another, swallows our pride, sets aside our individual opinion, and goes along to get along. In any community, in any spirit of collaboration, this can be a very wise and necessary type of self-denial (meaning, ego-gratification denial).

Yet there are also times when "our playing small doesn't serve at all," in the words of musician Howard Jones. We might have an idea, but refrain from sharing it. We might have an opinion, but hold back from expressing it. We might have a concern, but choose not to voice it. We might feel called to action, but fear taking it. And in refraining, holding back, choosing not to vocalize or act, we make ourselves smaller and deprive the world of our gifts.

Do an independent-spirit audit

Don't worry, we won't suggest anything too over-the-top to start, as you begin to reclaim and skillfully give voice to your independent spirit.

For now, simply notice how many times throughout the day you:

• Have an idea, but refrain from sharing it;

• Have an opinion, but refrain from expressing it;

• Have a concern, but refrain from voicing it;

• Have the urge to act, but feel fearful about doing so.

That's all simply observe yourself in action, and take note of when your independent spirit beckons, and how often you keep it under wraps. Once you become more aware of when and how you're "playing small," you can review your list to identify the circumstances and reasons and the reasons may be good, or they may not and make make choices about what will help you skillfully give voice to the independent spirit within you in a way that benefits those around you.
